Relic Floyd is a 2014 project by members of the
Dutch Pink Floyd, founded in 2009. On
their website we noticed these seducing words: 'Enthusiastic, professional
musicians, armed with an unconditional love for
Pink Floyd,
give the audience what it wants: that unique Pink Floyd
feeling!'. Well, this evening around 150 visitors were taken on a mind blowing
musical trip back to the 1967-1975 Pink Floyd era to enjoy that unique Pink
Floyd feeling, often resulting in goose bumps all-over!
Four piece band Relic Floyd has a sound which is mighty close to the early Pink
Floyd. With one's eyes closed, one might think this is the real Pink Floyd, from the very first notes of
Atom Heart Mother (1970) - which sounded better without an orchestra, as Relic Floyd proved - to the final notes
of
Celestival Voices from
A Saucerful Of Secrets (1968)! The latter song had
wonderful violin parts, coming from the Mellotron M400, played by
Ruud Peeters. Only one song was
included from the
Syd Barrett period, but it's one of my favourites, namely
Astronomy Domine. It was
a dynamic and psychedelic version with lots of improvisations.
Guitarist
Bart Logtens did an excellent job throughout the entire set, by playing some
superb slide- and steel guitar parts on his instruments. He did an especially outstanding job on
One Of These Days
. Keyboard player
Paul Daamen
succeeded to generate that wonderful and unsurpassed vintage keyboard sound on
Set
The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun (with some strong drumming by
Maurice Mater),
Shine On You Crazy
Diamond and
Echoes. He accomplished this by using instruments such as the Hammond- and Farfisa
organs, ARP synthesizer and Fender Rhodes electric piano. During
Eclipse,
singer/ bass player Ruud Peeters almost morphed into
Roger Waters,
due to his emotional vocals and facial expressions.
In the second part of the show the crowd really showed their appreciation and emotions, by
delivering primal screams and roars and most of all by giving them a standing ovation. The band was
visibly very pleased with this emotional reaction, which they fully deserved.
Most of all, this concert was a very skilled and inspired tribute to the early Pink Floyd!
