The Fërtility Cült are a Finish progressive rock group from Tampere formed in 2008. To be honest I never knew of their existence but they have released their fifth album A Song Of Anger on the Italian label Black Widow Records. The album was already released in October 2024 but got a reissue March 2025 but with a different album cover. Nowadays the band consists of Kailasha (bass, lead vocals), Mäkinen (drums), Heinonen (guitars), Solismaa (keyboards) and Ryhänen (saxophones, backing vocals). They got some help from the following musicians; Antti Loponen (Consciousness Removal Project) who did a guitar solo on Fame Everlasting, Minttu Tervaharju who did vocals on Briseis and backing vocals on the title track, Arttu Kimmel who did a guitar solo on The Curse Of The Atreides, Markus Pajakkala (Utopianisti) who did a soprano saxophone solo on the title track. And finally Pete Bingham (Sendelica) who did some spoken word on the title track. Together they created an album which is a mix of progressive rock, space rock, stoner rock, heavy metal and doom. The music is most of all enriched by keyboard and horn textures. The first two tracks A Thousand Starships and Fame Everlasting are for me personally songs that move music wise into the direction of space rock, stoner rock and doom. The good news, however, is that from the third track onwards the music really becomes interesting for progressive rock fans. The Duel starts with a nice synthesizer intro and is rather melodic. It even gets better on the next piece of music. Briseis is a beautiful mellow progressive rock tune on which the keyboards dominate the music. Also, The Curse Of The Atreides is a nice but heavier prog tune. Follow up No Surrender, No Retreat on the other hand moves more towards the music of Hawkwind. So, we are in space rock land. This concept album ends with the title track. A Song Of Anger is also with almost 13 minutes of music the longest track on the album. It is a track on which all musical influences come together. Sometimes Pink Floyd meets Hawkwind. So progressive rock and space rock hand in hand so to speak. The Fërtility Cült have made an album on which you can hear an original blend of progressive rock, space rock, stoner rock, heavy metal and doom. In other words, you could describe it as dark, ominous, psychedelic and atmospheric music. And if you are into this musical mix of styles A Song Of Anger is out there for you to buy! *** Henri Strik (edited by Dave Smith) Where to buy? |
