The two previous releases of The Cyberiam got raving reviews - "I am already addicted to this album (Forging Nations) and "I am pretty sure that Connected will end up very high on my top ten list of 2021" - of yours truly, and now their third album Unobtainium has been released. The music of The Cyberiam is a mix of heavy, atmospheric prog rock bands like Porcupine Tree, Tool, Dream Theater, Marillion and even Rush, the latter being of course my favourite rock band ever!! Unobtainium is Cyberiam's third album and without further ado I can say that it is again a MUST have album indeed. The opening track Are You There? featuring some rocky and metal-like riffs, also features the spoken "performance" of guest vocalist Rozzie and it is a song that you must get used to, but the chorus is rather soothing; so, check it out! Follow up Long Lived The Queen, also has a spoken section, but this track stands out due to the fantastic, jaw dropping guitar solo of Keith Semple. Trolls is definitely more keyboards driven while Double X is again a guitar force song. Ghost In The Machine is the ballad of the album and the title track, also the longest one of the album. It is the musical highlight; mixing Asian musical atmosphere with first class prog metal characteristics, truly reminding me of Tool, Dream Theater and Rush. So, another great album, the band's first ever vinyl release, by some of Chicago's most accomplished rock musicians, highlighting again Cyberiam's own unique brand of heavy progressive rock. Listening tip: Double X; play it LOUD if you can! ****+ Martien Koolen (edited by Dave Smith) Where to buy? |
