Red Orchid is a band, in fact it is a duo, from Washington D.C. and consists of Sanmeet Sidhu (guitars, vocals, bass, piano and keyboards) and Tom Dupree (drums). Blood Vessels & Marshmallows is their second album and the music of Red Orchid is a mix of Porcupine Tree and Pink Floyd elements blended with other progressive rock elements. The album was recorded in 2010 and 2011 and the mastering was done by Ty Tabor, who you will probably know from the cult band King's X. The album starts with the title track which is instrumental and sometimes sounds like Anathema, mainly due to the rather somber atmosphere of the song. Follow up Release sounds like a Steven Wilson song while Silent Train is rather melancholic and filled with spacy atmospheres. The longest song on the album Flabbergast Butterfly, which clocks in over 10 minutes, is also the best song with amazing guitar parts and also featuring some very obvious Floydian melodies and soundscapes. The final track Let Go:Jenni is a really sad song with a Porcupine Tree driven groove and a nice piece of orchestration in the end. I can really recommend this great album to fans of Porcupine Tree, Anathema and Pink Floyd. Check it out, proggies!
