In the past I had the honor of reviewing a lot of music from Newspaperflyhunting from Poland. I never missed an album or EP. The last time I reviewed their music was in 2022. That was the album Time Regained (see review) and was a full album, however the total time of that album was 35 minutes. This band is good at creating short albums or EPs. This time it is no other. With a total of only four songs and 27 minutes, Timeless is not that long. But if the music is good, I do not mind that it is a shorter one. The band still consists of Michal Pawloswki on guitars, bowed guitars, Irish Bouzouki, samples and vocals, Gosia Sutula - Grabowska on bass, keys and vocals, Krsysztof Sarna on drums and Beata Grzegorczyk - Andrejczuk on keys. A special mention is the cover of the album. Newspaperflyhunting are really good in creating covers that are a bit special. This time you can see a woman that has a skull in her hands. Not anything that you see every day. You can have your thoughts about it. This time I shrug my shoulders and have no thoughts about it, it is what it is. It does not give me a direction of how the music will sound. That is also because I really am familiar with their sound. Somewhere I hope this time it will be something different, on the other hand is a good post rock album welcome, in my opinion there are not that many post rock bands. The first one is A Moment and is also the longest track of the album at almost nine minutes. It starts with easy drumming and light guitar parts and takes its time. You have the chance to enter into the album in a light-hearted way. The singing of Gosia is like an invitation to come close to her. After a while Gosia is singing together with Michal and for me that is a great plus of this band, the voices complement each other perfectly. A lovely slow guitar solo takes you on the trip and is a long solo that feels so warm. Then the music, specifically the guitar parts, move to the post rock side, supported by Gosia and her lovely voice. Towards the end the song moves to the easy drumming and light guitar parts that we heard in the beginning of the song. Whatever happens in the coming three songs, this one is a great one, let that be clear. Now it is the turn on Distant Shores Apart, the second one on the album. A bit of dreamy guitars enter just as drumming on the cymbals, creates a nice sphere. Now it is time for the vocals of Michal and he is subdued. Slowly we move to singing together with emotional voices, after which a rougher piece of music follows alternated with easier parts. So, we can conclude that this song has a lot of styles and it fits perfect. After Distant Shores Apart, we are halfway through the album and then it is time for No Real Feelings. The title of the song predicts that this could be a song more in the heavy post rock style. And that is exactly what you get here, although the singing of Michal mutes that a bit. Variety in the song is also a good term of the music you are listening to, from the left to the right and back again. Towards the end it becomes a little less heavy. The last track on the album is Go Back. The song takes its time and after about one minute, the lovely guitar parts caress your ears, while enjoying Michal's voice. In this one you can hear the well-known post rock guitar parts. This song is also danceable, who ever thought that post rock is danceable? Well, me, I do experience it while dancing through my living room. And that is the nice thing about music and emotions, let yourself go! My conclusion is that this music has a place for a lot of people, if you are a person that likes to discover some new music styles now and then. If you are a person that only listens to the same music, than Newspaperflyhunting is not meant to be for you. I enjoy listening to this band for many years now. And to be honest, I do not listen to it every day, but now and then I need to listen to it, and that says enough. Go listen for yourself. You will not regret it. **** Michel Stolk (edited by Dave Smith) Where to buy? |
