After Satur9 & Indigo (2020, see review) Lost 3mbers is the second full length album of the band My Arrival. Before this band arose, we had the band Sylvium, led by Ben van Gastel. In this band Richard de Geest was the lead singer, as he also is for My Arrival. The band also consists of Fred Boks on the keyboard. The past brought us two full length albums and an EP. I can say that I really like the music of Sylvium because of the anxiety you feel throughout the music and lyrics. I always wanted this band to make more albums, but it seems that it is what it is. After the breakup of Sylvium a new band arose and is called My Arrival, as you could read above. I was very curious what style the music became, especially because I liked the Sylvium albums so much. I have to say that it took a lot of getting used to, the subcutaneous feelings were gone, and that was a pity to me. After all the album grew on me, however it could not top on the Sylvium material. And here it is, the second baby of My Arrival. Here are my thoughts about the album. The opening track, A Mind Caves, consists of bleeps from outer space and the words of Richard. This song ends with a bang and then it is the turn for Alone, which starts with lovely guitars. It is a real melodic song that reminds me a bit of U2, towards the end it slows down and the lyrics are important then. It is a joy listening to this song and promises a lot for the rest of the album. Sleep Of No Dreaming has catchy guitar work and good melodies. The voice of Richard is addictive and how he sings 'I cannot sleep' grabs you by the throat, great! Melodic is the word I give to track number four, Rock. By listening to this song, your shoulders and head slowly move on the rhythm of the music, lovely. Starfall is the next one. The music does remind me a bit of The Pineapple Thief, and then especially the guitar parts. Towards the end Ben gives a spectacular guitar solo, it thrills you. So Close is the sixth song and starts a bit desolate, it gives you exactly what the song is meant to be. In this song some keyboard parts stand out, as well as another guitar solo, this time a slow one that touches you. For the first time you hear a piano intro, and yes, it is time for the longest track of the album, as well as the title track. In this song there is a female guest singer and you can hear some solo's of the keys as well as the guitars. To me this is the highlight of the album, just because of the guitar solo, it carries you and touches you. Castaway starts up tempo, a bit different compared with the previous one. But also welcome and a nice one. Your Voice is the penultimate song of the album and sounds a bit laid back. The female singer comes again and sings together with Richard, nicely done. In the end she gives a big yell that sounds perfect. After that it is another time for Ben to give a great solo which is crossed by the sounds of the female singer after which the song fades out. At The Aphelion Of Faith is the last song and starts the atmosphere. The song is a bit mechanical and deals with the theme of hearing things that are not there. Ben gives a last guitar solo that fits in, thereafter the song and album fades out. Lyrically there is a theme, but I have not dived into it. All I can say about it is that Richard told the story in an exceptional manner, he has a great voice. All in all I can tell you that Lost 3mbers is a really good album, there is no single bad song on it. The musicianship between the members of My Arrival is great. It is not that there are excesses but exciting is a good word for this album. The production is top notch, wow to how it sounds. I hope to see the band live on stage one day, they deserve to be seen. **** Michel Stolk (edited by Tracy van Os van den Abeelen) Where to buy? |
