Lalu is a progressive rock and metal project spearheaded by Vivien Lalu (keyboards) and A Mythmaker's Demise, the fifth studio album, marks the 20th anniversary of that musical project. Vivien Lalu "invited" a couple of musician friends to join him on this album, being: Joop Wolters (guitar, bass guitar), Martin Lemar (Mekong Delta, vocals), Simon Phillips (ex-Toto, drums), and Jens Johansson (Stratovarius, ex-Malmsteen, keyboards). A Mythmaker's Demis is a concept album, and the ten songs are deeply rooted in the neo-progressive rock of the seventies and eighties; so, think of influences from bands like Toto, Marillion, Yes, Genesis and even Porcupine Tree. Opening track Tears Of The Muse has a sinister intro and is followed by intricate tempo changes galore, follow up EKO is dominated by guitar and bass guitar, while the passionate vocals and soaring chorus give this song an extra boost. I Am The One is a very well-played track, as it features a strong melodic earworm, a searing guitar solo and a wonderful keyboard solo. Mayacama is the first instrumental track of the album, and it almost sounds 100% like Toto; indeed, check out the marvellous guitar solo here. Prince With The Swift Warning is the lead single of the album and besides beautiful piano work it also features two excellent guitar solos. Fhloston Paradise is the rockiest song of the album, and the power rock chorus of this track is mighty indeed. Conclusion: A Mythmaker's Demise is an accessible, melodic prog rock album and all the songs are well played, well sung and maestro Simon Phillips stands out with his wonderful, versatile drumming talent and skill.
