HUM are a band from Germany. Founded in Frankfurt am Main in 2019 by three musicians with different musical backgrounds. The trio consists of Harri Gottschalk (guitar, vocals, samples), Martin Krause (bass, vocals, noises) and Florian Schnaith (drums, special fx). After their debut album ONE (2022), HUM continue to explore their dark stoner soundscapes. And now they have come up with, Three. The title Three has to do with three letters, three musicians, three instruments and three years. Three is an album with 11 tracks and 41 minutes of music. Music which features both powerful post-rock songs and psychedelic sound experiments. But also, stoner rock, alternative rock and slight influences of progressive rock. Each track seems to pursue an idea; each one a 4-minute journey. The themes revolve around environmental destruction, social aberrations, and space trips. The pieces of music are compact and melodic. They have heavy riffs sometimes but on the other hand mellow parts also. The vocals are mostly distorted with effects. The eleven compositions are mediocre sounding tunes for most of the time. But as on most albums you can discover some musical highlights. I found them also on Three. They are First Contact which is a rather nice mellow tune. We also have Underground which has a stunning guitar solo. Ashes To Ashes, not be mistaken by the David Bowie song, has some nice keyboard parts which moves it more into progressive rock territories. Also, It's Up To You is okay for me because of the mix of fine guitar and keyboard parts. But we should also not forget the single which came out before the album was released. It is titled This Means War. Which has nice distorted guitars and safety alarms sounds. If you like not too complex prog with influences taken from stoner rock, post rock and alternative rock Three is there for you to discover! *** Henri Strik (edited by Dave Smith) Where to buy? |
