I've Started, So I'll Finish is the third album released by Fearful Symmetry. I really liked their previous album The Difficult Second (2022, see review) - which I called thoughtful, melodic, rocky and jazzy - , so I was really looking forward to this new album of this studio-based project, originally created by cousins Suzi James and Jeremy Shotts. Suzi James is a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, flute, violin, oud, and mandolin) and on Fearful Symmetry's third album, she is again joined by Sharon Petrover on drums and Yael Shotts on vocals. The opening track One By One kicks off with drums, while throughout the song you can enjoy some marvellous guitar playing. The intro of the follow up song Hard As Diamonds features some cool guitar work, dreamy keyboards, and the mysterious vocals of Yeal Shotts. The Demented Third is the first instrumental song on this album - two more will follow - and it is a hard rocking song with a nice flute solo in the middle. There Are No Words is the obvious second instrumental, highlighting James' musical skills and the third instrumental is called Theme For An Imaginary Cop Show (weird title, right?) and here you can enjoy some great keyboards passages and some outstanding guitar picking as well. Finally, Fearful Symmetry ends this exceptionally good record with their longest track, called The Tears Of The Gods and it is a 100% true epic closer, packed with beautiful melodies, dreamy Asian sounding guitar chords, and atmospheric vocals. Conclusion: Fearful Symmetry has taken their music to a higher level, featuring an enormous diversity of styles and many musical moods indeed. Listening tip: One By One. **** Martien Koolen Where to buy? |
