Cobalt Wave are a new prog rock band, hailing from Poland and Men.Mind.Machine is their debut album and the music on this surprising album is melodic, but also heavy at times, mixing guitars, keyboards and piano with tight rhythms and tempos and heartfelt, but rather monotonous vocals. Cobalt Wave's sound could be described as a weird blend of Porcupine Tree, Pineapple Thief, King Crimson, Van der Graaf Generator, Riverside and Steven Wilson. Most of the music is cinematic, atmospheric, intense prog rock with excellent instrumental passages; however, the evident non-English accent of the vocalist Kuba Lopatka tends to bother and irritate me at certain times. Highlights of this debut album are the opening track New Religion - very melodic and excellent guitar work - and The Journey Ends Inside, which highlights lots of extended improvisations and powerful electric guitar work. The production of the album is excellent as the sound is clean and crystal clear. Men.Mind. Machine is a consistent and brave debut; a must-try for lovers of prog rock who like concept related music, improvisation, and reflection; so, give it a try.
