Benthos is an Italian progressive metal band and From Nothing is their sophomore album and their Inside Out Music debut release. From Nothing is a daring, raw, brutal, and ambitious album as this is truly 100% progressive music in the literal sense of the word. Benthos 's music is probably or better said, very likely, unlike any other music you have ever heard. After listening to From Nothing for the first time I thought, what the hell is this, as I was truly flabbergasted, as the tracks on this new Benthos album feature versatile vocal performances galore, utterly unorthodox arrangements, jagged rhythms, and musical performances at an exceedingly elevated level.

It Starts is the album's intro and it is not a real song, but just lots of increasing electronic noise, before we are treated to the title track, starting off quite mellow before it evolves into a rollercoaster of instrumental oddities with stellar guitar work all over the song. The longest song of the album is called Fossil, and this track could be described as post hard-core power metal, showcasing Benthos's musical abilities at their best.

Listening to other experimental tracks like Let Me Plunge, The Giant Child or Pure, bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Between The Buried And Me or even Polyphia come to mind; so, you know what to expect as a listener. This is not an easy album to listen to and even after a couple of spins I still cannot really comprehend what I have heard; is it utterly brilliant or is it utterly mental and maybe too ambitious and weird?

If you like experimental prog metal to the core and if you feel courageous and curious, then I would advise you to listen to this new Benthos album as it is an album that is truly unlike any other album you will have heard/experienced in a very long time indeed.
