A Memory And What Came After is the second album and major label debut for Asymmetric Universe, consisting of the Italian brothers Federico Vese and Nicolo Vese. Their new album offers nine instrumental tracks ranging from prog metal, fusion, jazz, funk, Latin to rock and should be interesting for fans of Dream Theater, Haken, Leprous, Periphery and Polyphia. Fair Enough is a rather rapid song filled with proggy guitar melodies, reminding me of the notorious Allan Holdsworth. Follow up Don't Go Too Early is even faster and for some listeners it might be too speedy and complicated for sure.... Reaction - Overthrow features a saxophone solo, and it also offers impressive, unpredictable tempo changes which makes you dizzy while trying to absorb all these musical techniques. Feather On A Glass is probably the most melodic track, featuring an almost anthemic chorus, while Opaco is packed with astonishing acoustic guitar picking. Dancing Through Contradictions is a remarkably diverse song as well, featuring nice guitar solos, lots of tempo changes and a cool jazz/funky bass guitar solo. Listening to this record a couple of times I can only conclude that these two guys have lots of talent and their playing is virtuosic, artistic, and very technical and that this album is a grower for sure. Try it and you might like it. ***+ Martien Koolen (edited by Tracy van Os van den Abeelen) Where to buy? |
