Pymlico musician Arild Brøter has gathered numerous Norwegian guest musicians to, as the subtitle says, reimagine Bond tunes. Being both a Bond and a prog fan, I obviously had to have this album. The guest musicians are Bjørn Riis (guitar), Ole Michal Bjørndal (guitar), Øyvind Brøter (keyboards), Oda Rydning (Percussion), Petter Lien (trumpet, horn), Håkon Rasmussen (bass), Mattias Krohn Nielsen (guitars) and Filip Brekke Steigedal (horn). Arild himself played on the drums, percussion, keyboards, bass guitar and additional electric guitars. It may very well be the best Bond adaptation so far (and frankly, I can't think of any prog adaptations right now, although the recent Rosalie Cunningham homage was very nice too). I don't want to point out a specific track because you should listen to this in one flow. For me, this works very well as I have done several times so during the past months. One of the things that I especially like with this album is that Brøter avoids most of the well-known (and slightly worn out) title tracks, and if he does use them, he cleverly reworks them so that they are not all that easy to recognise (as he for example does with fellow Norwegian's a-ha, The Living Daylights). He also combines music from different films, or various pieces from the same soundtrack. That makes for interesting listening, both if you are familiar with the originals and when this is a first time. Well done, and for all I care, there might be a part 2. As Arild writes: there's plenty of material to draw from! ****- Carsten Busch (edited by Dave Smith) Where to buy? |
