Some people might call this overkill, another live album by Steve Hackett; but I think that Wuthering Nights is again a classic live album that only Hackett could come up with. This live double CD marks the 40th anniversary of the Genesis album Wind And Wuthering, the last album of Genesis with Hackett as a guitar player.
So, on this live recording you can enjoy five tracks (Afterglow, In That Quiet Earth, Eleventh Earl Of Mar, Blood On The Rooftops and One For The Vine) from Wind And Wuthering, which was originally released way back in 1976! Other classic Genesis tracks on this album include: The Musical Box, Los Endos, Dance On A Volcano and the magical Firth Of Fifth. Hackett is assisted by Roger King (keys), Nad Sylvan (superb vocals), Gary O Toole (drums) Nick Beggs (bass guitar) and “special” guests John Hackett and Amanda Lehmann. The first CD is packed with Hackett's solo work, such as the “oldies” Every Day or Shadow Of The Hierophant (great as usual) and three tracks (Behind The Smoke, El Nino and In The Skeleton Gallery) from his newest album The Night Siren (see review), released in 2017. The sound of this album is again, as usual, top notch and the guitar solos, riffs and melodies of the master himself become better every time you hear him play; check out the still wonderful solo in Firth Of Fifth! So, conclusion, this is absolutely NOT a redundant or superfluous album, on the contrary, it is again a great Hackett album and I would not mind if he would release such a wonderful one like this one every year! Wuthering Nights: Live In Birmingham is a MUST for Hackett and Genesis fans.
Those who want to see Steve and his band in action there is also the DVD/Blu-ray version of this amazing concert. Which also includes fascinating behind the scenes footage, most of which was filmed on the day in Birmingham and three videos from the songs Behind The Smoke, Fifty Miles From The North Pole and West To East, so.......
