Protein For Everyone is about “the nagging neuroses bubbling under the surface of everyday life and images a brave new world where you can sell parts of your anatomy to be processed into cheap tasty meat for easy cash”. A heavy subject that reminds me of Sci-Fi classics like Soylent Green. But Schnauser wouldn't be named after a German dog if they didn't bring it with a blink in the eye, with lots of humour and a light sound.

Musically Schnauser is inspired by bands such as early Soft Machine, Supersister, White Denim, Stephen Malkmus and the Canterbury scene. They use instruments and also techniques that were used in that period. But it also reminds me of the Britpop sound of Super Furry Animals. The late sixties were an optimistic time (in the sense that people thought that things could really be changed), and Schnauser brings this album with a sense of optimism.

It is a sympathetic album made with love and dedication. Yet it lacks a bit of depth. It is not an album that plays on in your memory after it is finished. A Schnauser that barks doesn't bite.
